Hitting Your Mark
Part Two

Every bowler knows that consistently hitting your target will lead to higher, more consistent scores.  In part one, we talked about three things that can help you hit your target: 1. Narrow your target; 2. Pay attention to where you stand on the approach; 3.Pay attention to where you end up at the foul line.  In part two, we will discuss three more things that will help you hit your target more consistently.

1.      Reach for your target.  Every pro bowler that you see on TV has a nice follow through.  Most of them throw the ball out on the lane a little because they are making sure to follow through.  Failing to follow through is failing to complete the shot.  There is a proper way to follow through, just as there is an improper way to follow through.  To follow through properly, the hand must be to the right side of the head for a right hander and the left side of the head for a left hander.  If a right handed bowler follows through with their hand on the left side of their head or in front of them, the chances of hitting your target is much slimmer.  One drill that I like to use to help me with my follow through is to put a small towel just past the foul line when practicing.  This makes me throw the ball over the towel.  It is not easy to throw the ball over the target without a good follow through.

2.      Bend your knees at the foul line.  One habit that a lot of bowlers have when trying to throw a hook, is standing up at the foul line.  Standing up at the foul line will make the bowler miss the target to the left a lot.   Sometimes it is caused by trying to get that extra “lift” on the ball.  We want to make sure we lift up through the ball good, and so sometimes, we try to use are whole body to do it.  We should all try to bend are knees as much as possible when releasing the ball.  I know that some of us are older or just have bad knees, but we should still bend our knees as much as we can.

3.      Stay slow with your feet.  Bowling is not a race.  A slower more moderate pace will help you achieve higher scores more consistently that a faster out of control pace.  This is especially hard for the beginners.  Fast feet make the bowler “spray” the ball all over the lane.  Some people have a faster pace than others, but we all have a pace that will help us consistently hit our target.

I hope that these things will help you consistently hit your target.  Pay attention to the higher average bowlers and pro bowlers on TV, and you will see them do these things.  These are some of the basics in their keys to success.  For any questions or pro shop needs, please email Jose at .
